Facts Why Math Teachers Use MDTP

MDTP hears math teachers say that they prefer MDTP results to other types of math assessment data for these reasons:

MDTP is FREE!

MDTP is FREE! When commercial tests are expensive and fleeting, all MDTP diagnostic and open-response assessment, consultations, and services are free to CA secondary math educators thanks to grant funding from the California Academic Partnership Program (CAPP), the UC Office of the President (UCOP), and the CSU Chancellor's Office (CSUCO).

MDTP is Intersegmental

Established in 1977, MDTP remains one of the only intersegmental math projects uniting California secondary and postsecondary math educators whose vision is to support and prepare all students for success in their math pathways.

Quality and Longevity

MDTP was written into the California Ed code in 1989 as a state recognized project (see CA Ed Code Title 3 Article 3.5 ) receiving accolades over decades for quality work and longevity.

Intersegmental MDTP Workgroup

Highly qualified math faculty spanning the UC, CSU, CCC, high school, and middle school systems form the MDTP Workgroup who create MDTP tests, review statistical analyses from field tests, and govern MDTP policy.

Statistically Reliable, Valid, and Predictive

Every MDTP test is field tested for 3-5 years using rigorous statistical measures to ensure each test is valid, reliable, and predictive of students’ success.  The MDTP Workgroup vets each assessment to ensure it is bias free, assesses the appropriate content, and provides reliable and predictive results.

Formative

MDTP questions are designed to illuminate ways students are thinking about math to help teachers learn what their students know.  MDTP data and assessments help teachers to implement instructional recommendations from the 2023 CA Mathematics Framework.
