MDTP Readiness Tests

MDTP Readiness Tests are diagnostic assessments designed to measure mastery levels in foundational topic areas that are necessary for students’ success in that course.  MDTP readiness tests inform students’ mathematical preparation for the content in the course-level students are entering, and/or to inform students’ preparation for the mathematical content in the course they are promoting to. 

The diagnostic results should be used formatively to: understand students' strengths and areas of unfinished learning, inform instruction and interventions, evaluate course readiness, measure program growth, and identify appropriate professional learning.

MDTP tests can be administered any time throughout the school year and are available in both paper form and on the MDTP Online Testing platform.


Since the adoption of the California Common Core State Standards for Mathematics (CA-CCSSM), MDTP is actively developing and releasing the following readiness tests aligned to common core curriculum expectations

  • Fall 2015, MDTP released the Grade 7 Readiness, Grade 8 Readiness, and High School Readiness
  • Fall 2017, MDTP released two high school level readiness tests for curriculum from the integrated framework: Integrated Second Year Readiness and Integrated Third Year Readiness.
  • Fall 2018, MDTP continues to field test three tests: the Middle School Entry-level Diagnostic for students entering Grade 6 common core classrooms and the Geometry Readiness and Second Year Algebra Readiness for students entering coursework defined in the Traditional Pathway in the Mathematics Framework for California Schools.

Middle School Entry-level Diagnostic Field Test

(MS35D18)

This diagnostic field test assesses students' readiness in foundational topics necessary for success in a California common core entry-level middle school mathematics course. Field-testing should occur in Grade 6 classrooms.

This test has 35 questions.

The Prealgebra Readiness (PR40A04) has been replaced by the Grade 7 Mathematics Readiness (7R40A15) and the Grade 8 Mathematics Readiness (8R40A15). Teachers may continue to use the PR with the understanding that it is not aligned to common core curricular expectations for middle school mathematics courses.

The Algebra Readiness (AR45A10) has been replaced by the High School Readiness (HS45A15), which is aligned to the CA-CCSSM. Teachers may continue to use the AR45A10 with the understanding that it is not aligned to common core curricular expectations for entry-level high school mathematics courses.
